From the outside, integrated circuits are mysterious black boxes. This talk discusses how to open up and study some ICs from the 8008 microprocessor and the first FPGA chip to 8086 processors, both real and counterfeit. I explain how to analyze the structures in historical integrated circuits and understand them.
Ken Shirriff restores old computers, including a Xerox Alto and an Apollo Guidance Computer. His blog (righto.com) discusses reverse engineering everything from chargers to microprocessors. He also wrote the Arduino IRremote library and added seven characters to Unicode.
